household items that may not be readily available in retail stores.
• Services - Telecoms, Gas & Electricity Supplies.
• Personal - Cosmetics, Fragrances, Skincare, Jewellery, Clothes.
• Food & Wellness - Foods, Supplements, Diet Plans, Fitness, Aromatherapy.
• Household - Kitchenware, Housewares, Furnishings, Electrical,
Cleaning, Security.

Whilst other sectors such as mail order, direct mail and
the internet also offer the opportunity to make purchases from the home,
Direct Selling companies have a unique advantage. It is the opportunity to
give customers the chance to talk to someone who represents the company,
knows about the products on offer and, very often, someone who uses the
products themselves.
A personal recommendation from a satisfied customer is a
powerful endorsement. With most Direct Selling businesses it is also
possible to see, touch and sometimes even try out the product before
deciding to buy - all with the added bonus of having the order delivered
to the home.
A wide range of possibilities
Currently Direct Selling businesses in the UK account for
almost 100 million consumer transactions per year with an average value of
under £20. It is this
modest average - which does not require high pressure selling - that adds
to the appeal of a part time business opportunity in Direct Selling.
Not all direct sales are made in private homes. In 2002, 15% of total
sales were made elsewhere, for example the work place. For some part time
Direct Sellers who have another job, there is the opportunity to make
sales to friends and colleagues at work. With the growing willingness of
the business community to permit Direct Selling in offices during break
periods - some companies now specialise in this way of doing business.
